Kanya King CBE Dies at 57, Leaving Behind a Legacy That Changed British Music
The music industry is mourning the loss of pioneering entrepreneur and cultural trailblazer Kanya King, who passed away on June 3, 2026, at the age of 57 following a courageous battle with colon cancer. Her death was announced by the MOBO Organisation, which described her as one of the most fearless champions of Black music and culture.
For millions of music fans, Kanya King was more than an entrepreneur. She was the visionary behind the MOBO Awards, a platform that transformed the recognition of Black music in the United Kingdom and helped launch the careers of some of the biggest artists in the world.
The Woman Behind the MOBO Awards
Born in Kilburn, North London, to a Ghanaian father and Irish mother, Kanya King’s journey was one of determination and resilience. She overcame significant personal and financial challenges before building one of the most influential music brands in Britain.

In 1996, while working as a television researcher, she identified a major gap in the music industry. Black artists were achieving success but often lacked recognition at mainstream award ceremonies. Determined to change that, she launched the MOBO Awards—short for Music of Black Origin. To fund the first event, she reportedly remortgaged her home, demonstrating her belief in the mission.
What started as a bold idea quickly became one of the UK’s most respected music institutions.
A Platform That Created Opportunities
Under Kanya King’s leadership, the MOBO Awards evolved into a global cultural force. The platform celebrated genres including R&B, hip-hop, grime, reggae, jazz, gospel, African music, and electronic music. It provided visibility and opportunities for artists who would later become global stars.
Over the years, MOBO honored artists such as Stormzy, Dave, Little Simz, Wizkid, Davido, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, among many others.
Her influence extended beyond awards shows. Through initiatives such as MOBO UnSung, mentorship programs, and educational opportunities, she helped countless young people pursue careers in music, media, technology, and business.
Her Courageous Battle with Cancer
In late 2024, Kanya King publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with stage-four colon cancer. Rather than retreat from public life, she used her platform to raise awareness about early detection and health screening. She spoke openly about her experience and encouraged others to take their health seriously.

Despite her illness, she remained actively involved in the organization she built, continuing to inspire those around her with her determination and optimism.
Tributes Pour In
Following the announcement of her passing, tributes from across the music, business, and entertainment industries began pouring in. Artists, executives, and fans have praised her for breaking barriers, championing diversity, and creating opportunities where few existed before.
The MOBO Organisation described her work as an act of “cultural justice” that gave Black music the recognition and respect it deserved. The organization also announced that the 2026 MOBO Awards, which mark its 30th anniversary, will be dedicated entirely to her memory.
A Legacy That Will Never Be Forgotten
Kanya King did not simply create an awards show. She created a movement.
Her vision helped reshape the British music industry, opening doors for generations of artists and proving that diversity, representation, and talent deserve a place at the center of popular culture. Through her work, she changed countless lives and inspired future generations to dream bigger.
While the music world mourns her loss, her legacy will continue through every artist she championed, every opportunity she created, and every barrier she helped break.
Rest in Peace, Kanya King CBE

Kanya King’s story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of culture. Her contribution to music and society will be remembered for decades to come.
“The music world has lost one of its most fearless champions.” – MOBO Organisation.
